Making Room for Yourself Between Work, Motherhood and Everyday Life

A realistic starting point for protecting a little space for your own needs in a full season of life.

The short answer

Making room for yourself does not have to mean adding another ambitious routine. Start by noticing what replenishes you, then look for a small, repeatable window or a task you can simplify, share or let go. The right choice depends on your responsibilities and support; small needs still count, even when a full hour is not available.

Start by naming what you need

When work, parenting and household responsibilities fill the day, “make more time for yourself” can sound like one more demand. Begin smaller: what would help you feel a little more supported this week? It could be a quiet coffee, a proper lunch, movement that feels good, time with a friend or help with one recurring task.

Your need does not have to be productive to count. Rest, enjoyment and connection are real parts of a life, not rewards you have to earn after everything else is finished.

Look for a small opening or a shared task

Instead of adding a whole new routine, look at what is already in the day. Could a ten-minute walk fit after school drop-off? Could an appointment be paired with a call to a friend? Is there a household job someone else can own, or a standard you can simplify for this season? Small changes can reduce friction.

If support is available, make the request concrete: “Could you take dinner on Thursday so I can go to my class?” A specific task and time are easier to respond to than a general request to help more. If you are carrying too much, the solution may need to include other people and systems—not just better personal organization.

A practical example

You might take ten minutes after school drop-off for a walk, ask another adult to cover one recurring task, or keep a simple snack ready so lunch is less rushed. Choose what would make the day feel more manageable.

Try this next

Name one small need of your own and choose when, this week, you could make room for it.
